Getting a tattoo in Bali: The Basics of Tattoo Aftercare

February 2, 2024

Congratulations on your new tattoo! We hope it's a beautiful piece of art that you'll be proud to wear.

Did you know that proper aftercare is just as important as the tattooing process itself? It plays a vital role in ensuring a great outcome and keeping your tattoo vibrant. Follow these essential aftercare steps to keep your tattoo looking its best.

1. Keep the bandage on

This step is crucial to protect your new tattoo from any unwanted bacteria or dirt. If your artist used SecondSkin, leave it on for 1-2 days. This layer allows your tattoo to breathe while shielding it from external elements. If cling wrap was used, remove it after 2-4 hours to avoid excessive moisture buildup.

2. Gently clean your tattoo

When it's time to unveil your tattoo, clean it with warm water and a mild, fragrance-free soap. Be gentle, though—no rough scrubbing! After washing, gently pat the tattoo dry with a clean, soft towel. Avoid rubbing or scrubbing the area, as it may irritate the skin and slow down the healing process.

3. Moisturise

Apply a very thin layer of our recommended aftercare product, Balm Tattoo, specifically designed to nourish and protect your tattoo during the healing process. You can purchase Balm Tattoo at our studio. If you prefer using your own cream, just make sure it's suitable for tattoo aftercare and doesn't contain any harsh ingredients or perfume.

Repeat every time you notice the tattoo is getting dry.

4. Don't scratch!

We know it's tempting, but keep your hands off from your tattoo! Picking or scratching can lead to regrettable consequences, like scarring or color loss. Let your skin heal by itself.

Patience is key here, you got this!

5. No swimming

Stay away from the ocean, pools, as well as saunas, and hot tubs. Keep your tattoo away from soaking in water until it's fully healed. We don't want any unwanted bacteria crashing the healing party.

6. Avoid sun exposure

Sunshine is great, but your tattoo needs protection. As much as possible, keep your tattoo covered with clothing. Once it's fully healed, use some sunblock with SPF 30 or higher whenever you're outside.

7. Listen to your artist

They know best! Your tattoo artist might have specific instructions for your tattoo. Listen to their advice, follow it diligently, and you'll be good for a tattoo that's top-notch.
